FinTech is Eating the World, 17 June
Hey Everyone,
Good morning & happy Wednesday! Today we’re diving into payments giant Adyen, which is now pushing deeper into Agentic Commerce after OpenAI’s checkout failure (what Adyen Agentic is all about, how it compares with Stripe’s Agentic AI initiatives, & what’s one thing nobody talks about here + bonus dives into Google’s bid to become the ultimate OS for all e-com, Visa & Mastercard’s AI challenges & how to build your first AI Agent from scratch inside), and Robinhood, which just laid of 10% of its employees without mentioning AI even once (what does that tell us, why it matters, & what it means for the future of fintech + bonus deep dive into Robinhood & Coinbase’s latest financials and why now it’s the perfect time to productize yourself inside). So let’s jump straight into the interesting stuff 🌶️
Adyen and Stripe push deeper into Agentic Commerce after OpenAI’s checkout failure hands Google the protocol race 🤖💳
The news 🗞️ Two of the world’s largest payment processors just escalated their agentic commerce bets within days of each other. Adyen launched a full API suite for AI agent transactions. Stripe expanded its own infrastructure through Amazon’s AWS.
Both moves come three months after OpenAI’s Instant Checkout collapsed (Walmart saw 3x worse conversion rates; fewer than 30 Shopify merchants ever went live) and weeks after Stripe joined Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol, a quiet concession that the standard it co-built with OpenAI lost the race.
But the most telling detail is this - neither can point to real transaction volume from the channel they’re building for 👀
So let’s take a closer look at this, understand why it matters, and what’s next.
