Hey Everyone,

Good morning & happy Thursday! There are days when years happen… Yesterday was one of those days, so today’s issue is deeply focused on two separate yet strategically interrelated developments that might change the way money moves. We’re diving deep into Stripe, which just built the toll booth for the machine economy (breaking down the Machine Payments Protocol, why it’s huge & how MPP stacks against other Agentic Protocols + bonus deep dive into Stripe building the infra for AI-driven payments and how Google wants to become the Android of Commerce), and Visa that just shipped a credit card for AI bots (what it is & why Visa is doing it, how it stacks with MPP and what to expect next + bonus deep dive into Visas’s latest financials, and how I turned Claude Cowork into my personal COO that does the work while I sleep). So let’s jump straight into the paradigm-defining stuff 🌶️

Stripe just built the toll booth for the machine economy 🤖🪙

The BIG News 🔥 Yesterday wasn’t about a blockchain launch. Tempo mainnet going live is the sideshow. The real (& the biggest) move is this: $159 billion FinTech giant Stripe now owns the payment protocol that AI agents will use to pay each other, and it’s already an IETF draft.

The Machine Payments Protocol, co-authored by Stripe and Tempo engineers, repurposes the 30-year-old HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code into a full authentication scheme for autonomous machine-to-machine payments.

→ An agent hits a paid API endpoint

→ Gets a 402 challenge

→ Fulfills it with a crypto deposit or fiat token, and

→ Receives a cryptographic receipt.

No accounts, no API keys, no human in the loop 🤖

Sounds huge? Because it is. Let’s unpack this, understand why it matters, and what’s next.
